Columbus Day commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. It became a federal holiday in 1937.

From Pressdemocrat:

The California Redwood Chorale plans to go to Verona in Italy next April to compete in the International Choral Festival, and then perform in Florence. The choir presents its "Road to Italy" concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Glaser Center, 547 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa. $20. 874-3770.

And if none of that appeals to you, there's always pizza, which is American, Italian or international, depending on who's talking.
